This bizarreness stems from the fact that each day, after they are done with the horrors of their conquest, they are submitted to a process which simply wipes out parts of their daily memories and experiences (their negative emotions and any sedimentary and residual conscience they might have left regarding what they have done). It is something which in the long-term leaves everyone devoid of empathy and realisation. This perpetual tuning up has the protagonist wondering, “What's worse? The fact that we are harming others or ignoring that we have harmed others?”
